In the previous part of this article I began covering the top ten locations for UK tourists to visit this year in South America, already covered was Panama City, The Atacama Desert in Chile and cookery classes in Mexico. The rest of this list continues with some destinations a bit further south including Brazil, Peru and even director Francis Ford Coppolla’s lodge in Guatemala.

7. Pantenal, Brazil
Brazil is famous for their football team, carnivals and the enormous statue of Jesus that overlooks Rio de Janeiro but aside from these iconic symbols there is a wealth of nature lurking just miles away from the cities. One such location is Pantenal; it holds the title of the world’s largest wetland and many people in the know claim that the amount of nature present rivals even the Amazon!

Pantenal is just one of the many emerging holiday hotspots in Brazil as well as the Serra Geral Mountains in the southern part of the country. Recently interest in Brazils has been sparked by the sighting of tribesmen in the jungles within Brazil. You may not be looking to join a native tribe but the nature in Brazil can certainly rival the draw of the big city.

6. Peru
Peru is a popular destination amongst backpackers and gap year students partially due to all the ancient ruins which are a spectacle to see. Manchu Picchu is a popular hot spot for hikers, but beware; the hiking is tough going.

The culture of Peru is a historic one too with many of the communities sticking to traditions that have lasted generations free of the trappings of modern life. Some holiday companies have an easy time getting people to come to Peru because in some cases the locals will insist you stay with them as hotels are few and far between in the mountainous areas.

By sharing the living space of a local family you can get the most authentic feel of what life is like in the region, plus all you’d need to pay for is your flights to the country which doesn’t hurt!

5. Guatemala
When the man who directed the Godfather and slaved over Apocalypse Now to the point of exhaustion chooses a holiday spot you can rest assured that it will be worth it. Francis Ford Coppolla owns a lodge in Guatemala called La Lancha and is set in an amazing area of Guatemala that should impress the Indiana Jones’ out there.

There are many ancient Mayan ruins which served as inspiration for the latest adventure of Dr. Jones this summer nearby such as Tikal which is home to the enormous pyramids and encroaching jungle undergrowth seen in many movies. Similar architecture can be found at Uaxacatún which is home to large stucco sculpture traditional to the area. Yaxhá is a wonderful lakeside location that many people who have seen Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the Crystal Skulls will be familiar with. It is most definitely worthy of booking flights, packing the fedora and bullwhip to go exploring if you are looking for a more historic and interesting holiday.

In the final part of this article I’ll be covering the final four destinations that I recommend for holidays this year. With cheap flights to Mexico and other countries now may be the best time to explore new grounds.

Nanaimo is a beautiful city located in British Columbia. This beautiful city has lots to do and see. People flock here each year to take advantage of the beautiful countryside as well as enjoy the many activities that are available here. For those individuals that visit the city and decide to call it home there is denying the allure of the city.

For those individuals who are relocating to Nanaimo for whatever reason there are a few things to keep in mind. The city has a warm and fairly temperate climate so individuals need to keep this in mind when taking their clothing. November to February is the coldest and wettest months and generally individuals can keep by with a nice rain jacket. Many people also wear sweaters or wool during this time of year. July is generally the hottest month in the city and summer may last until October.

Many people relocate to Nanaimo because it has a lot to offer. AS mentioned previously it has a great climate, the job market is experiencing a steady increase and it has a very consumer friendly real estate market. The local university also continues to expand and grow. The retail, wholesale as well as the construction and manufacturing industry have continued to experience growth and people come here in search of a comfortable and peaceful living as well as a good job. Nanaimo is also a transportation hub and daily flights and ferries make sure that the residents have plenty of ways to travel.

For those that are relocating with the job some jobs offer relocation assistance to their employees. Before taking a job it might be a good idea to ask about any money that will be given. Some jobs help individuals find a home and will even help them to buy or rent a nice place to leave. For those who are relocating and there is no relocation assistance or it is not job related they may want to look at other choices. Local real estate agencies as well as travel agencies can provide individuals with relocation assistance and information. Real estate agencies can also send individual information about potential homes or areas to live based on the options they need. Realtors generally know more about the city then some travel agencies when it comes to information about the various neighborhoods. The tourism agency also has information for those people who are looking to make the city their new home. Online information can also provide individuals with information about the real estate market and other information so that individuals have an idea what they are getting into.

For those who need relocation assistance from the government they may want to look at the governmental programs that are offered to people depending on their income level or other features. They will have to check with the local service department to get more information. Relocating to Nanaimo can be a good idea for so many reasons because the great job and housing market can really help individuals looking to start over and make a good life for them and their family.

Volunteering in Chile can be an amazing learning experience, one that you are unlikely to forget. Pretty much isolated from the rest of the world.

Chile’s natural barriers such as the most arid desert in the world, the Andes Mountain range, the Pacific Ocean, and the ice fields in Southern Patagonia, offers such a tremendous amount of diversity to this extended and thin country that it’s considered as the jewel of South American continent.

Much loved and popular, it is said that in Chile you are never too far from the sea, the mountains, or the desert. Currently, on an economic fast track, Chile is now experiencing a newer and improved socioeconomic stability as compared to the other South American countries.

However, this capitalistic approach has ended up widening the gap between the economically richer and poorer sections of the society. As a volunteer to Chile, you will have many opportunities to do something really worthwhile as you travel from one city to another, helping people to gaining emotional, financial, and physical independence.

Why Volunteer In Chile
With 5,000 kms of South Pacific coastline, Chile is a wonderfully blessed with pristine beaches, and plenty of tourist activity. Furthermore, Chile can also lay claim to some portion of Antarctica and if these reasons are not enough for you for volunteering in Chile then consider this.

Across the nation, there are several NGOs that are willing to accept you as volunteer to help them in their attempts to improve housing for the poor, provide assistance for academic development, work with drug addicts, offer expertise at medical health centers, and show compassion towards the homeless and much more.

Why not take a year’s gap to volunteer in Chile as well as travel this country, which is a contradiction and reflection of global landscapes?

Types Of Projects Available in Chile

Community Welfare programs: Volunteering in Chile for community welfare programs include delivering food for homeless people, doing social work in poor communities, teaching at various education centers, taking care of children at day care centers, assisting the homeless and terminally ill patients, etc.

Education programs: Assisting as a teacher in rural schools will offer you the opportunities to teach the locals various subjects such as Math, Science, geography, history, even crafts, arts, knitting, etc.

Teach English programs: If you can also teach conversational English to children, women, and adults thus, helping them to make the best of global opportunities, which demand knowledge in English language.

As a volunteer in Chile on this project, you will work with teenaged children who are currently in youth shelters due to sexual abuse, neglect, or abandoned by their family. These shelters give children a safe place to study, live, and develop.

If you’re still wondering whether or not you’d like to book your dream vacation through a travel agency; stop wondering. Yes, you do want to book your vacation through an agency!

A travel agency provides convenience, and great deals on airfare and reservations. There really isn’t any reason not to use a travel agency. However, if you still need a little convincing, below we’ll list ten of the top benefits of booking a vacation through a travel agency…

#1 – One Stop Shopping

Simply put, being able to grab your airline tickets, your hotel reservation, your rental car, and anything else you’d need all in one place, you save yourself the tedium of having to make dozens of phone calls and book every single component of your vacation one piece at a time. In addition to the above, one vacation may require transportation to and from the airport, more than one hotel if you will be visiting different cities or countries, ground transportation such as trains, buses, and taxis, and multiple reservations for dinner, entertainment, and sightseeing.

#2 – Insider Experience

More than just “somebody who buys tickets for you”, a good travel agent is also something of a travel expert. This is because, if a traveler sends a negative review of a hotel in to a magazine, that magazine might not print it if that hotel advertises in the magazine. But if a travel agent meets a new client who complains of a bad trip they had, the travel agent doesn’t have any reason not share that with you. A travel agent can warn you of sites that aren’t all they’re cracked up to be, or recommend lesser known getaways.

#3 – Customized Service

Going through a travel agent who listens to your needs, you can expect to rely on their advice and know how to get you exactly what you need. You might not know exactly what that is right off the bat, and a travel agent can recommend specific vacation spots, hotels, and airlines to suit your specific vacation goals. You can describe to the agent all the requirements you are looking for (within one block from the beach, ocean view, on-site babysitting, etc.) and they can often suggest a better alternative than perhaps the first destination you had in mind.

#4 – Consumer Advocacy

When you hear that travel agents make their money by commission, you might think “Oh then they’re probably going to try to sell me the most expensive thing available!” But that practice is actually frowned upon in the industry, and, think about it, are they going to get a lot of return business if they keep ripping people off? A good travel agent is going to work on your behalf to try and get you the best possible vacation you’re willing to buy, simply because it’s your business that keeps them in business.

#5 – Best Value

Because travel agencies receive tickets at whopping discounts, and because they collect commission rather than a fee, you can expect the absolute lowest prices around through travel agents.

#6 – New Discoveries

If you’re planning a tropical getaway, you’ve no doubt heard of the Bahamas and Bermuda, but you know what that means… so has everyone else. A travel agent should be able to help you find lesser known, truly private and special vacation spots.

#7 – Safety and Security

Travel agents can inform you of the necessary visa, passport and health requirements for international travel and provide application forms or assistance as needed. They can also keep you up to date on any travel warnings or advisories such as natural catastrophe or political unrest. Even if it’s just a little thing like “always shake with your left hand when visiting the Middle East”, the expert knowledge a travel agent can provide can make it a lot easier to get along with the locals, wherever you’re headed.

#8 – Reliability

If you’re just flying off to Mexico on a half-cocked whim, there’s no guarantee you’re going to be able to find a rental car and a hotel. Using a travel agency’s all inclusive vacation packages; you can expect your rental car to be sitting there at the airport waiting for you.

#9 – Personal Contact

Basically, using a travel agency, even online, you get real live people you can talk to. You won’t get this with simple ticket comparison sites. And if something happens on your trip — unexpected illness or document theft — your travel agent can get you the help you need when you need it.

#10 – Convenience

This one is simple, do you or don’t you want to spend all day making long distance calls to hotels thousands of miles away and trying to find out if they have a twin bed room open on August twenty first? Even 800 lines can have you holding all day or navigating endless automated menus. Using a travel agent is kind of like having a shock absorber for hassles and headaches.

Would you like to vacation in the Caribbean, Jamaica to be exact? If so, you will need to soon start making your travel arrangements. When doing so, you may come across all-inclusive Jamaica travel packages. If you are like most travelers, you may be curious as to what they are. You may also be wondering if they are worth the buy.

All-inclusive travel packages, at first glance, are similar to traditional vacation packages. What they do is take a number of your travel arrangements and expenses and combine them all into one neat package. Depending on the package in question, your airline reservations may be included in the cost of your stay. As great as that sounds, it is not all that you will receive. In fact, you may be surprised with exactly what they do include.

As you likely already know, all-inclusive vacation packages include the cost of your overnight accommodations. The good news, however, is the flexibility that you are provided with. In addition to staying in a traditional resort room, you can also book a stay at a luxury suite. Are you traveling to Jamaica for your honeymoon? If so, how about a stay in a romantic honeymoon suite where the mood is already set for romance? Regardless of which room you choose to rent, the cost of your accommodations will be included in your travel package.

All-inclusive packages also include your food and drinks. However, you will want to proceed with caution. This is where it is important to know that all-inclusive resorts come in a number of different formats. Aside from traditional resorts, you can find those that are labeled as super-inclusive or ultra-inclusive resorts. If you are truly looking to get the most out of your next Caribbean vacation, these types of resorts should be examined. Why? Because all of your food, drinks, and snacks should be included in the cost of your stay, with little or no restrictions.

The onsite activities that you gain access to are another reason why all-inclusive resorts and travel packages should be examined. While most hotels and resorts come with swimming pools and fitness centers, you are often provided with so much more. All-inclusive resorts come with top-of-the-line fitness centers, sometimes with fitness trainers available onsite. Multiple swimming pools are not uncommon as well. For ultra-inclusive or super-inclusive resorts, other water and land based activities may be included in the cost of your stay. These activities may include, depending on the resort in question, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, golfing, tennis, and volleyball.

If what is included in an all-inclusive Jamaica travel package wasn’t enough reason to buy one, the time that you can save is another reason. It is no secret that booking and planning a vacation can be a long and sometimes stressful process. The good news is that stress is eased with travel packages. Not only can you make multiple travel arrangements at once, but you pay for them ahead of time as well. When staying at a Jamaica resort where all of your food, drinks, entertainment, and tips are included, most of your vacation expenses are paid for before you even leave for your trip! This gives many tourists, like you, comfort and peace of mind.

In conjunction with saving time, easy of booking is another one of the many reasons why all-inclusive Caribbean packages are popular. With so many benefits, you might assume that these great deals are hard to find, but they are not. There are a number of online travel websites that are devoted to helping you find and plan your dream all-inclusive vacation. As an important reminder, to get a better value for your money, examine super-inclusive resorts, as they provide you with access to more food, drinks, entertainment, and onsite amenities.

As you can see, there are a number of reasons why you should book your next Jamaica vacation in the form of an all-inclusive trip. When examining all of your options, at SuperClubs.com, you may be surprised with the choices that you have. Aside from all-inclusive and super-inclusive resorts, there are family friendly resorts, adult only resorts, couples resorts, and a combination of all three!

Amaranth is an herb full of vitamins. It was traditionally used by Native Americans in both Central and North America as a survival food. This herb has been cultivated for thousands of years in many different cultures due to the fact that it grows well in most climates and uses a very small amount of water. Amaranth contains a huge amount of protein and a lot more calcium than milk provides. It also contains the amino acid l-lysine, which is not often found in plants. Amaranth seeds were used by the Aztecs in their pagan ceremonies. Additionally, mature seeds of the amaranth plant were eaten raw, mixed with cornmeal, or added to soups. The leaves, which taste similar to spinach, can also be eaten.

Often, amaranth is used for gastroenteritis or the stomach flu. It helps to lessen the irritability of the tissues. A strong decoction of amaranth can be used to remove worms and other parasites from the digestive tract. Applying amaranth topically can help to reduce tissue swelling. The herb can be used with bandages for medical treatment. Additionally, it can help stop excess bleeding which is often caused by sore gums, nosebleeds, and heavy menses. Amaranth is highly digestible and is recommended for infant formulas.

Amaranth is a traditional food plant in Africa with the potential to improve nutrition greatly. There are several species of amaranth grown in Asia and the Americas for grain. Ancient grains still used to this day include three species: Amaranthus caudatus, Maranthus cruentus, and Amaranthus hypochondriacus. Even though amaranth was grown on a small scale in parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, India, and Nepal, there is a huge potential for future cultivation in the U.S. and tropical countries. Because of this, this herb is often referred to as “the crop of the future.” Because of a weedy life history, amaranth grains grow very rapidly, with their seedheads weighing up to 1 kilogram and containing a half-million seeds. Amaranthus species have a 30% higher protein value than rice, wheat flour, oats, rye and other cereals.

Amaranth was revived in the 1970s because of it is very palatable, easy to cook, and a protein that is well suited to human nutritional needs. This herb was recovered in Mexico from wild varieties, now being commercially cultivated. A popular snack sold in Mexico City, this herb is often mixed with chocolate or puffed rice. Its use has recently spread to Europe and parts of North America. Amaranth is a pseudo grain because it has a very similar flavor and cooking ability to grains. Along with protein, amaranth provides a great source of dietary fiber and dietary minerals including iron, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and manganese.

The leaves, seeds, and flowers of the amaranth plant are responsible for all of the health benefitis provided. Amaranth’s properties include: alterative, astringent, demulcent, diuretic, and nutritive. Primarily, amaranth is used for diarrhea, dysentery, excessive menstruation, and nosebleeds. Amaranth can also be used for canker sores, bleeding gums, stomach and mouth ulcers, worms, and wounds. For more information on the benefits of this herb, please contact your local health food store.

Columbia is a country in the north- western part of South America. It is the fourth largest country in South America after Brazil, Argentina and Peru and the third most populated country. Although Columbia is not a tourism country, there are many things to be seen and appreciated here. Some of the most important things that you, as a tourist, must appreciate if ever in Columbia are coffee and women.

Columbia produces over twelve percent of the coffee in this world. Some of the finest coffees you have ever tasted are Columbian and centuries of experience have learned Columbians how to make the best coffee in the world, so it would be a shame not to taste Columbian coffee in Columbia. The second thing that needs to be appreciated in Columbia is women. However, if Columbian coffee can be bought from the store next to your home, you cannot meet Columbian women in the park you occasionally go for walks. There probably are some Columbian women living in your country, but it is very unlikely that you will meet Columbian single women as you are walking down the street.

However, there are two best ways of meeting Columbian single women. One of these ways is going to Columbia. If you are either on a business or pleasure trip, you will have the occasion to meet Columbian women and convince yourself that the praises they receive are not in vain. Another good way of meeting Columbian women is to use a dating agency. Columbian single women join these dating services in hopes that they will find their love or at least a great friend. The first option probably sounds more tempting at first, but if you come to think of it better, using a dating agency to meet Columbian single women is more reasonable and a lot easier.

Dating agencies offer you the opportunity to meet Columbian women who actually live in this country or Columbian single women who live all over the world. From the very beginning, you might find that the Latin girl of your dreams actually lives in the same town you do. Moreover, if you use dating services to look for the one you want to spend the rest of your life with, you know from the start that she is looking for the same thing you are. Dating agencies make sure the girls they choose are sincere, loving and family oriented and that their intentions are true.

Using a dating agency is also very easy and safe. You go online, view some pictures of Columbian single women and choose the ones you want to talk to. You can talk to your chosen women as long as you want and if there is some chemistry between you, things will develop from there. However, if you have spoken to her on several occasions and at some point you realize she is not the one for you, the relation ends without anybody getting hurt.

All in all, there are two good ways of meeting Columbian single women: one is to travel to Columbia and the second is to use a dating agency. Although it has its advantages, the first option cannot be used by anyone, and even if you have the time and money necessary to make the trip, you have no guarantees that you will find the one you are looking for. The second option guarantees that you will meet Columbian women and it is available to everyone.

Alvin Starkman M.A., LL.B.

When I first gave up the practice of law in Toronto in favor of early retirement in Oaxaca, I assumed that the years I would add to my life by leading a much more stress-free existence in Mexico, would be lost by the inferior health care system to which I would be exposed, subjected and restricted. This, then, is my assessment of the extent to which my presuppositions have been accurate, together with information and advice for both vacationers to and would-be ex-patriot residents of Oaxaca.

Aside from the small, private hospitals, often referred to as clínicas, there are four publicly funded and insurance – based hospitals in the city, as well as a hospital just outside of the city offering specialized treatment for a number of serious ailments. There is the Red Cross facility available to all, often used for emergency treatment only. The civic hospital provides free services or treatment at a modest cost based on a sliding scale respecting means. ISSSTE is a federally funded facility restricted to government employees who are members of a union. Finally, there is IMSS, a federal insurance program available to ex-pat residents and Mexican citizens alike, with an extensive network of clinic doctors and a large hospital. It’s funding is provided in large part by business owners. Aside from these hospitals, there are several, small, easily accessed clinics scattered throughout suburban and rural neighborhoods.

For the vacationer, and the ex-pat with a VISA permitting residency in the country, the most common means by which to obtain emergency treatment is through Red Cross, IMSS (which accepts patients without coverage on a pay-per-service basis) or a private hospital. However, the last of these three is the only one in which you can be reasonably reassured of being attended in a timely fashion by extremely competent and efficient personnel.

WHAT TO DO AS A VACATIONER

If you do not have out-of-country healthcare coverage, by all means go out and buy it before leaving for your trip. However, it’s advisable to first inquire of your credit card company, to ascertain if in fact you already have at least some coverage simply by virtue of, for example, having a gold or platinum card. You can then make a more informed decision concerned whether or not to purchase coverage, and if so at what level. On the other hand, a broken leg, gastrointestinal problem or other non-life threatening ailment can be attended by a private doctor or clinic without breaking the bank. Of course for an outlay of more than $100, it’s nice to be reimbursed.

If you intend to make a claim to your private carrier, credit card company or government funded health care plan, ensure that you not only keep all receipts, but request a written diagnosis and treatment plan, and that the prescriptions you are given indicate for what purpose each medicine is being prescribed (i.e. antibiotic, analgesic, etc.). Many doctors provide all required information simply as a matter of course. Accepted practice, at least except for when narcotic medications are being prescribed, is for the pharmacy to return prescription forms to you. Often medical plans require translations of each document that is presented to them as a prerequisite for processing and reimbursement. When in doubt, submit all documentation with your claim, making sure to determine if originals are required, and keep copies. Frequently, as is the case with Ontario, it’s a two step process. Treatment receipts and diagnosis is submitted to the provincial plan. Once you’re notified of the portion not covered, prescription receipts together with a request for reimbursement for the amount not covered by the province, is submitted to one’s private plan. In theory, between the two plans, 100% reimbursement is achieved.

You can ask the manager of your hotel or bed and breakfast to do you a favor by translating each of your supporting documents, to save you the trouble upon your return home. Make a note of the then prevailing rate of exchange, and submit a calculation to your plan with your documentation, to more easily facilitate payment. When a member of a clerical staff is processing your claim, he’ll be less inclined to put yours aside for another day or week if it already contains all the necessary and relevant data, organized in a readable format.

Concerning where to go in the event of illness or emergency, your accommodations host should be able to make recommendations for English speaking physicians with private practices, and for private clinics. Regarding competency of the former, while there is a medical school in Oaxaca, many doctors travel out-of-state for their post-graduate training such as to universities in Mexico City or the US, and regularly attend conferences and upgrading courses. Some travel abroad within the context of their specialization training. Indeed the Oaxacan populace appears to take notice of and prefer those physicians who are able to display foreign diplomas.

Our personal experience with emergency treatment over the past 10 years has been nothing but positive for ourselves, our family and our guests, at hospitals Carmen and Molina, both downtown … in terms of competence, speed with which one is attended, and the presence of English speaking ER doctors. On the other hand, we cannot recommend the emergency departments at the civic hospital or IMSS because of delays in receiving treatment, and at minimum in the case of IMSS unavailability of competent medical personnel 24 hours a day to attend to even a commonplace emergency (i.e. suturing). Having said this, many excellent surgeons with private practices perform surgery at the non-private hospitals where there tends to be the more state-of-the-art and sophisticated equipment.

The normal range in price for a consultation with a family doctor, specialist or dentist, is $20 – $50 (all figures are stated in US dollars and are approximate for 2008 unless stated otherwise).

PURELY ELECTIVE AND COSMETIC PROCEDURES

Over the past several years Oaxaca has become a popular destination for Americans and Canadians seeking both plastic surgery and extensive dental work. Word has spread of the competence and quality of work of both nip-and-tuck and dental surgeons, and of course of their extremely reasonable charges relative to those paid to hometown practitioners. Many foreigners, as well as Mexicans from Mexico City and other regions of the country come to Oaxaca for face lifts, breast reductions and augmentations, liposuction and other appearance enhancing procedures. A friend who attended for plastic surgery in Oaxaca by a well-known plastic surgeon a couple of years ago, recently commented that she had read an article in a Canadian magazine indicating the cost for the same procedure which she had performed for $500, was $3500 – $5000 at home. In effect she had a free trip to Oaxaca, and returned home with extra money in her pocket.

Our personal experience with dental treatment has been extremely positive. Cost tends to be about a third to a half of American and Canadian prices, for example for crowns and bridges, implants, root canals, gum and bone work, etc. While the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) has not yet arrived in most Mexican cities, a dentist with a gentle touch can more than make up for that lack of temporary high while in the chair.

RESOLVING THE EX-PAT CONUNDRUM

Get whatever coverage is made available to you both in your homeland and in Mexico, subject of course to affordability.

To my thinking, with IMSS coverage costing under $400 annually for a couple, why not go for it regardless of what other coverage you already have. Then supplement IMSS with international coverage for catastrophic injuries unless you have other similar insurance from another source. Our Oaxacan friends tend to disagree, but theirs is a different mindset where insurance in general has historically not been stressed or valued, be it home, car or health.

Some American acquaintances swear by IMSS since it provides regular care including preventive procedures, all dispensed by government employed physicians including specialists, together with lab tests, medication and hospitalization. There are restrictions the first year of enrolment, and there are caveats. The level of cleanliness in the clinic environment tends to be below the standard to which most of us have become accustomed growing up in the US and Canada. Many physicians have not received the quality of medical education of their private counterparts. The medications provided through the clinic pharmacy are often not the best available in the marketplace for treatment of a particular ailment, because of cost. Often the wait to see your designated doctor or for your lab tests can be long, requiring a half day commitment for each step in the process: visiting a general physician, going for one set of tests, then for another, and finally seeing a specialist.

So why bother with IMSS at all, with all these downsides? It’s a failsafe, another form of assurance that you’ll be cared for in the event of a lengthy and serious illness. As suggested earlier, often it’s the largest hospitals such as IMSS which have the best equipment, and surgeons with private practices who perform some of the surgeries. And there is no additional cost for hospitalization once you have full IMSS coverage. While attending a private clinic is more akin to your experiences before moving to Mexico, if you must remain in hospital for a lengthy period of time, the cost of doing so in a clinic could be prohibitive…just like back home.

Visiting private physicians, and even biting the bullet and getting your tests done at privately owned laboratories, reasonably assures you of a familiar quality of care. Coupled with IMSS coverage, you can now be confident that you’re covered in almost all respects. In the event of a protracted hospital stay you can afford to be there for as long as necessary. The best locally available equipment will be used in your diagnosis and treatment, and you have a reasonable likelihood that attending surgeons are those who split their time between private practice and clinic work, and performing procedures in one or more large hospitals.

We maintain IMSS coverage, but rarely use it, preferring to tap our Oaxacan social networks for referrals to specialists to the extent they are required. And in any event, after having been resident in Oaxaca for a few years, those of us who are in our fifties or older have already been introduced to a broad range of specialists. As strange as it still is to be a Canadian and subscribe to the pay-as-you-play philosophy of medical care, it serves our purposes, with the IMSS safety net just in case.

Under certain circumstances you may not want to rely on even the best Oaxaca has to offer. Indeed the stream of Oaxacans traveling to Mexico City flows briskly and wide. The middle and upper classes with contacts in the nation’s capital, there quickly seek out the best in terms of physicians and state-of-the-art equipment, for diagnosis and for treatment of life-threatening diseases.

Even doctors working in Oaxaca at the IMSS and ISSSTE hospitals can make arrangements for patients to receive treatment not available here, to be attended in Mexico City or other larger centers. However, the process can be slow. We know of one case, that of a two-month-old baby with heart problems, who was finally sent to Puebla for surgery at ISSSTE, only to die before the procedure could be performed.

The solution, unless you have quality foreign coverage perhaps as part of your retirement pension plan, is to buy insurance which will pay for treatment in Mexico City, or better yet throughout the world as long as you can make your way to one of the participating top-of-the-line hospitals. In my case, I have a low annual premium, with high deductible which is waived in the event of accident. Again, it’s a failsafe mechanism in the event of, for example, a serious car accident, or cancer, stroke, heart attack, or other catastrophic ailment which would otherwise not be affordable. Oaxaca has less than the best of diagnostic equipment and treatment facilities. My plan provides for a $10,000 deductible, $2,000 annual premium, with member private hospitals in Oaxaca, Mexico City and elsewhere in the republic, and of course abroad including the US, with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester being a participant.

In summary, my medical coverage and plan for treatment is the following. We have our regular family physician, who, along with our Oaxacan friends, refers us to specialists in which we have the utmost confidence, and to whom we pay per visit. The same holds true for dental treatment. We have IMSS coverage which we reluctantly (because we don’t use it) renew on an annual basis, but believe it’s worth the price in the event we need extended hospitalization, or to have surgical procedures performed not available in private clinics. And I have my catastrophic coverage which hopefully I’ll never need to access.

Medical care and coverage can be inexpensive, and just as easily it can be costly. It’s a matter of the individual or family having a philosophy, or set of priorities, before electing to move to Oaxaca. You have to determine how you want to lead your life in terms of balancing having less disposable income as a result of medical and insurance costs, with having greater peace of mind in knowing that whatever is thrown your way will be looked after as best possible given your new life in a foreign land. If you cannot achieve a level of comfort in the resolution of these issues and decisions, then perhaps the move is not for you.

Have you recently decided that a trip to Jamaica is in your future? If you have, you may be ready to start making your travel plans. When doing so, you will see that you have a number of different staying options. Two of the many options that you have to choose from include private Jamaica vacation rentals and all-inclusive resorts. So, which is best?

Jamaica vacation rentals come in a number of different formats. Most commonly, you will find vacation homes, cottages, and villas. Condos and apartment rentals are also available as well. For standalone establishments, these rentals are private, as you and your traveling party should be on the only vacationers staying there.

As for Jamaica all-inclusive resorts, they are similar to traditional vacation resorts, but you are provided with more extras. These extras will depend on the resort in question. For example, some resorts may have onsite boating, kayaking, or snorkeling. When staying at an all-inclusive resort, the cost may seem higher, but there is good news. That good news is that the cost of your stay should include your resort room, food, drinks, tips, and possibly your onsite entertainment.

As previously stated, most Jamaica vacation rentals are private. This is one of their many pros or plus sides. Add in the fact that they are all fully furnished, with a kitchen included, and you may like what you see. When you are provided with a fully furnished and functioning kitchen, you can prepare your own meals. This can allow you to save money. With that said, remember that the cost of food and drinks are included in the price of an all-inclusive resort stay.

Another pro or plus side to staying at a Jamaica vacation rental is the freedom that you are provided with. You may find little or no rules and restrictions. Due to the lack of other guests, you should be able to come and go as you please, without having to worry about disrupting others. On that same note, know that many all-inclusive resorts are themed, like for families, couples, and singles. By choosing the right kind of resort, you can find the resort that best fits your vacation wants and needs.

As nice as Jamaica vacation rentals are, it is important to know that they do have their downsides. One of those downsides is often a deposit. Commonly, deposits are required to stay at a private home. This deposit is used to ensure that you do not cancel your travel plans at the last minute or that you keep the establishment in good condition. Limited availability is another downside. Due to a limited number of vacation rentals and the fact that Jamaica is a popular vacation destination, they can be hard to make reservations for at the last minute.

As for all-inclusive resorts on the island of Jamaica, staying at one makes planning your travels easy. As previously stated, the cost of an all-inclusive vacation should include more than just your resort suite. Your food, drinks, tips, and entertainment may be included as well. This makes planning your trip easy and worry free.

As mentioned above, some Jamaica resorts have themes. You will find family resorts, couples resorts, singles resorts, and adult resorts. Choosing the resort that is the perfect fit for you can help to maximize the overall success of your vacation. For example, if you are planning a romantic getaway, a couples resort can allow you to better focus on romance, as those around you are looking to do the same.

The availability of all-inclusive Jamaica resorts is another pro to choosing one. With so many resorts to choose from and each resort being able to accommodate a number of guests, you shouldn’t have any problems making reservations. In fact, some of the most well-known resorts on Jamaica are known for offering last minute travel deals and discounts.

As you can see, both Jamaica vacation rentals and inclusive resorts have their pros and cons. Your decision should depend on your own personal preferences, as well as your vacation wants and needs.
